In 2006 the Southern Illinois Bluegrass & BBQ Festival featured a first year Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned contest. 15 teams met to make this historic event a State Championship contest. Fun was had by all. In 2007 the Illinois BBQ Society played a bigger role in teaming with KCBS to help this contest grow to a whopping 50 teams, and although two of the teams chickened out after making it this far, this contest drew some of the best new teams and most well known names in the barbeque world. Even more fun was had by all. 2008 has arrived and September 12th - 13th is promising a BBQ Throwdown & Jam to rival the best of the best that Salem, Illinois has ever offered! Yes, it still holds the "State Championship" status; Yes, it will be one of the first Qualifiers for the 2009 Jack Daniel's World BBQ Championship Invitational; Yes, it is a qualifier for the world renowned American Royal Barbecue! By all measurable standards, this jewel of a contest in the King City's crown was a great success. Not too hot, not too cool, just a little rain on Friday afternoon, and all fun. Troy Heitmeyer and crew (Tony and MaryBeth) did a phenominal job in keeping this classic a very cook friendly contest, and providing everything neccessary for KCBS Reps Phillip and Kathy Brazier to do their job as suberbly as usual. After all the smoke had settled, there were a few surpises as teams crossing over from Memphis BBQ Network, and a handful of new teams, came in to the contest to try and stake their claim. This year, we are donating proceeds to the woman who draws our logos every year. She had a premature baby some time ago due to Toxemia. She went blind temporarily and is now facing quite hefty travel expenses plus the expense of eventually bringing the baby home. Just a bit of background... this is the 3rd Annual event. The 1st event sold out in 45 minutes, we had 3 teams. Last year was 7 teams and we sold out in a little under 2 hours. It's VERY fast paced but it's a blast and the public loves to be able to sample the ribs. (plus, really, where else can you get a slab of ribs for under $20?) Prizes will be trophies this year along with prize money. We have 1st, 2nd, 3rd and People's Choice. Judging will be done by one accredited judge as well as local politicians, Jaycees office holders, etc. We'd like confirmed teams by June 25th, but we will take entries up until the day of the event. Our new location this year puts us just outside the beer garden downtown with live bluegrass music to be going on during the cook-off. Thanks so much!
