The HPBA Expo 2008 (Atlanta, Georgia) is now a memory for the thousands of vendors, suppliers, retailers, manufacturers and buyers. It was a good show. Thanks to our friends at Ace of Hearts BBQ Specialties (North Kansas City, Missouri), I was able to spend most of last week getting to experience the expo with a 'hands-on' approach. Wednesday through Saturday brought windy, cold weather; sunny pleasant weather; great food, and even better friends. I had the opportunity to spend a great deal of time with 8 time American Royal Grand Champion Chris Marks (General Manager of Ace of Hearts), learn from Christopher Marks (Chris' son and operator of Three Little Pigs BBQ Restaurant in Topeka, Kansas), work side by side with Tammy Marks (Chris' bride), Paul Cox (retired Naval Commander and Rancher), and Jay Mathiesen (Owner of Backyard Bash in Kansas City, Missouri); not to mention the 'inside' booth folks of Brad, Rob, Bill, Gene, Ryan, and Chuck. It was a neat experience. Over the course of the expo, we must've cooked up 30 or 40 briskets, scores of pork butts, countless racks of spare and baby back ribs, who knows how many pounds of sausage and whole chickens, and a 75 pound whole pig...all to feed HUNDREDS of expo attendees. Again, it was a neat experience. Both Thursday and Friday, I was able to chat with Ian McKend (ProQ BBQ from England), and chatted with Ray Lampe (Dr. BBQ) over in the BGE booth where he was doing some demo cooking.
